Mastering Transients with Piper Payne
Control that fleeting feelings. How to get the most out of your dynamics chain with Mastering Engineer Piper Payne (Third Eye Blind, Madame Gandhi, Geographer). Mastering is the technical pursuit to give the artist what they want. Piper believes mastering is 3 things: It's quality control to make sure there are no errors or issues with the sound. Second thing is a format conversion, taking a collection of songs from one format and putting them onto another. The third part about mastering is finishing the creative process of making a record and beginning the manufacturing process of making a record. In this video, Piper gets super nerdy about audio. This session was live streamed during MIX & MASTER on September 11. For more live events, head to musicexpo.co. Mastering In-The-Box, Outboard or Hybrid with Mastering Engineer Piper Payne
In this video, Mastering Engineer Piper Payne compares mastering in-the-box, with outboard gear, and hybrid to show you what it takes to make great masters in all workflow scenarios! The goal of a mastering engineer is to serve the project in the best way possible to achieve a correct sound. Sometimes, great masters are achieved by using lots of different outboard, analog gear, and sometimes it’s only in the box and digital… sometimes it’s a hybrid of both. There is no wrong way to master a song, but there are best practices and things to watch out for that I’d like to share. This is a recording of our live stream on June 11, 2020. Mastering: The Bigger Picture with Michael Romanowski
This video is a recording of our livestream May 28, 2020 Mastering is an essential part of process of releasing music. It is equal parts art and technology. Regardless of how your music is distributed, physical manufacturing or digital distribution, there is a Big Picture perspective that needs to inform your decisions. In this final stage of the engineering, and the art of it, is listening very deeply to “How” is the music presenting itself. Not “What” is the content of the music. In this session, Michael discussed the perspective of mastering, listening, monitoring environment, considerations for release in different formats and more.
